You may convince yourself that more than just the Twelve were present – You can see that some of the 70 are present at the Last Supper (compare Luke 22:35 and Luke 10:1-4). In the second place, he is writing at a time and in a place where he ought to have known who it was that was responsible for putting together the Fourth Gospel, and equally clearly he reflects the influence of the millennial theology we find only clearly in the Book of Revelation in the NT and not for example in the Fourth Gospel.
On the contrary, he had to be constantly condensing his material, as is so often the case with an eyewitness account that is rich in detail and substance. There are other factors as well.
